Trains make it easy to meet people! As a specialist in Switzerland and Asia at Discovery Trains, Romane Gaudré shares how her train journeys allowed her to make friends and connect with locals.

Did you like trains before joining Discovery Trains?

When I joined Discovery Trains, I was a student in a work-study program. At that time, I wasn’t especially into trains. What attracted me was the idea of exploring a new way to travel — one that let me reduce my impact on the planet. That eco-conscious motivation was a big part of why I applied. But it wasn’t the only reason. I also wanted to see landscapes and meet people during my travels.

Did you have the chance to travel by train during your work-study?

Yes! I did a big train trip through Switzerland with our Production Director, Yulia Santalova. We visited Lausanne, Zurich, and Lucerne, and I rode the GoldenPass Belle Époque between Saanen and Montreux — such a charming train that crosses some incredible scenery. I also discovered Mount Rigi, combining a boat ride, a cogwheel train, and a regular train ride. I really made the most of my Swiss Travel Pass! I had never taken mountain trains before, and in March, the peaks were still snow-covered. I loved the whole experience.

Has your job influenced your personal travels?

Absolutely! For example, I decided to visit Scotland by train. I went to Edinburgh and the Highlands. I wanted to see with my own eyes the Glenfinnan Viaduct — the one featured in Harry Potter. I especially loved my stop in Pitlochry, a traditional small town with plenty of character. While traveling there, I met French travelers and we spent a really fun evening together after I returned to Edinburgh.

After finishing your studies, did you travel in Asia?

Yes — I wanted to explore a part of the world I didn’t know. I traveled for two months with a backpack and a flexible plan that allowed a lot of improvisation. I went through Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea — and whenever I could, I took the train. In Thailand, for example, I took the overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.

Some friends I met in a hostel didn’t understand why I chose the train — it cost the same as flying. But for me, the landscapes were worth it. Sure, I was cold sometimes because the A/C was blasting, but the views were beautiful.

How are night trains in Thailand?

There are no private cabins on the Thai night trains. During the day, seats are arranged two-by-two facing each other. Around 7 p.m., the staff convert the lower seats into a single bed, and a top bunk folds down, creating two bunk-style beds. You can draw curtains around your space for some privacy. At about 5 a.m., everyone is woken up — I arrived in Bangkok around 6 a.m.

Which trains were your favorites on your journey?

I’d say the trains in Japan and Sri Lanka. In Japan, I took the Shinkansen (bullet train). It was pretty easy to use — although I once missed my train because of a taxi! Luckily, I could board the next one at no extra cost. The view of Mount Fuji between Tokyo and Osaka was stunning. I took that route during cherry blossom season and arrived in Osaka at the peak of the blooms. Absolutely unforgettable.

Did you also ride trains in Sri Lanka?

Yes — and I really loved Sri Lanka, where I stayed for three weeks. Trains there are essential. Between Weligama and Colombo, the line runs along the ocean, through forests and jungle. Vendors walk through the carriages with snacks and ice cream — and I managed to stay healthy the whole trip! (Laughs.) I rode in second class, where there’s no air conditioning. But the windows are open, so you can lean your head out.

Did you meet interesting people during your travels?

So many! I usually stayed in hostels, so it was easy to make friends with other travelers. In theory, I was traveling alone, but in South Korea between Busan and Jeonju, we ended up a group of eight.

One of the most memorable meetings was on the Sri Lankan train with a young local girl who noticed my tattoos. She was 16 and traveling with her parents. We exchanged Instagram info — and she followed my journey through my stories!

When she saw that I was arriving in Korea, she suggested that I meet her sister in Busan. We met up, and then she introduced me to her friends. It wasn’t very Korean — but it was incredibly warm and welcoming. In reality, I’ve never really traveled completely on my own.

Did you enjoy visiting South Korea?

I spent two weeks in Seoul and could easily have stayed longer. I also visited Busan and Jeonju. Honestly, I think I might have liked Korea even more than Japan. We don’t yet offer South Korea as a destination through Discovery Trains, but I’d love to create an itinerary there someday. It would include all the travel tips I’ve learned — for myself, my friends, and future travelers.
