Considering a luxury train journey through Italy? Is it because Italy epitomizes charm and elegance, or because the beauty of its cities, landscapes, and coastlines invites contemplation? Italy is definitely the land of luxury rail travel.
The most famous luxury train in Italy isn't entirely Italian. It's the renowned Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express, owned by the British company Belmond (formerly Orient-Express Hotels Ltd until 2014). However, the history of the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express is indeed Italian.
In 1971, American businessman James Sherwood bought two luxurious first-class train cars in Italy to transport clients to his newly acquired Cipriani Hotel in Venice. He then purchased and renovated more cars from famous trains like the Blue Train, Golden Arrow, and North Star. In 1982, he launched the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express. Today, luxury train journeys like the Venice-Paris route are available several times a year. Note, however, these journeys are brief, lasting only two days and one night, similar to the London-Verona route also served by the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express.
A train journey in Italy can be part of a broader European rail adventure. Unlike the brief trips on the VSOE, you can embark on a luxurious rail cruise, a true epic journey, aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express.
During the Grand Alpine Crossing, this train departs from Budapest, passing through Vienna, Zurich, Milan, Lake Como, Lake Garda, Verona, Trieste, and finally Venice in an eleven-day tour. It's one of the most luxurious ways to visit Italy by train and also one of the most expensive, of course.
