Wild spirit of Scotland (Royal Scotsman)
LUXURY TRAIN (4 days, 3 nights on board) This journey immerses you in the heart of Scotland’s natural beauty — mountains, gardens, and captivating wildlife. Hiking and guided visits await.
DAY 1: EDINBURGH
Flight or train to Edinburgh available upon request.
Approximate departure: 1:45 p.m.
Your adventure aboard the Royal Scotsman begins with the sound of the whistle. The train travels through Scotland’s wild landscapes, rolling green hills, and rugged mountains. Inside, Edwardian elegance, cashmere fabrics, and tartan accents create an atmosphere of refined comfort.
As you enjoy your afternoon tea, the train heads north, passing through Perth, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, and Blair Atholl. The gentle hills of Perthshire give way to the dramatic scenery of the Highlands and the ancient forests of Cairngorms National Park.
The train stops for the night in the peaceful village of Boat of Garten, on the private Strathspey Railway line.
After a gourmet dinner, the evening continues in the Observation Car, where musicians play lively Celtic tunes. The atmosphere is warm and convivial — perfect for sharing stories over a fine local whisky.
Overnight on board the Royal Scotsman (D)
DAY 2: KYLE OF LOCHALSH
This morning, the train departs toward Inverness, capital of the Highlands.
During lunch, you’ll travel one of the most scenic railway lines in the UK, heading toward Kyle of Lochalsh.
You’ll pass through Achnasheen, climb to Luib Summit, and cross the forest of Achnashellach before descending toward Strathcarron. A visit to the magnificent Attadale Gardens, part of the Macpherson family estate, awaits you — complete with a Japanese garden, reflective ponds, and sunken flower beds. Refreshments are served on site.
Alternatively, you may remain on board until Plockton, a charming coastal village where you can watch wild seals, take in views of Applecross Bay, and enjoy a traditional welcome in a local pub with a fine whisky in hand.
Another option is a guided nature walk near Kyle of Lochalsh through wooded trails with views of ancient castles, red deer, and golden eagles. The walk ends at the tranquil waters of a freshwater loch.
The day concludes in Kyle of Lochalsh, gateway to the mystical Isle of Skye, where the train spends the night.
Overnight on board the Royal Scotsman (B, L, D)
DAY 3: AVIEMORE
Early morning departure from Kyle as the train retraces its route toward Inverness before continuing to Aviemore.
Here, several experiences await on the Rothiemurchus Estate: fishing, clay pigeon shooting, or even wild swimming (by prior arrangement). For a more peaceful option, try forest bathing — a guided sensory walk through the woods. Refreshments are served at the hunting lodge, where you’ll learn about the estate’s history.
Return to the train for lunch, then visit a renowned Speyside distillery in the afternoon for a private tasting.
Alternatively, you may enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the River Spey or around picturesque lochs.
In the evening, rejoin the train in Boat of Garten. As it heads toward Perth, an exquisite farewell dinner is served. End your journey in style with traditional dancing and live music in the Observation Car — a perfect conclusion to your Scottish rail adventure.
