- excursion by train to Elsinore and the Kronborg Castle of Hamlet fame. Round off the day with a visit there before taking one of the frequent trains to Copenhagen central station on your return journey. Overnight in Copenhagen.

Day 3

After breakfast, departure by direct train for Kalmar on the east coast of Sweden. You'll journey through the fields, forests and lakes of southern Sweden before arriving in Kalmar at the beginning of the afternoon.

Your afternoon is free to stroll around this delightful town of both maritime and strategic importance : don't miss a visit to the imposing Kalmarslott fortress in the old town, witness to battles past.Overnight in Kalmar.

Day 4

You have the whole day to expore Kalmar and its surrounding area and we suggest you choose one of the following possible excursions :

- by local train from Kalmar to Hulstfred and from there a a ride on the preserved historical metre gauge railway to the port of Västervik. Return by regional train via Linköping.(Only 2 July-14 August).

- by local train to Växjo, the "green city", ensconced in the middle of the forests and lakes of the province of Småland. Visit of the town, bathing or walk around the lake.

- by local bus to Bornholm, capital of the island of d'Öland, "the windy isle ". Bathing and stroll through the streets of this harbour town. Overnight in Kalmar.

Day 5

After a buffet breakfast, short transfer by train and bus via Berga to the port of Oskarshamn. Embarkment aboard your ferry for Visby, capital of the island of Götland. The island is some three hours off the Swedish coast, in the middle of the Baltic sea.

On disembarking you'll have time for a short visit of the town (left luggage lockers are available at the Ferry Terminal) before boarding you boat for Nynashamn, Stockholm's port to the south of the city.

After navigating at sea, then along the coast to the south of the Stockholm Archipelago, your boat will dock at approximately 21h.(1st July-14th August at 22h30). A short journey by connecting public transport will bring you to the city centre where your 3*** hôtel is situated. Overnight in Stockholm.

We suggest you take your bearings on this your first day in Stockholm. Your hôtel is close to Drottningsgatan ("Queen's Street"), Stockholm's main thoroughfare, with its many shops, bars and restaurants and all of Stockholm's city centre sights are within easy reach on foot : the Town hall, the Royal Palace, the Old Town (Gamla Stan), and of course the harbour, gateway to Stockholm's archipelago and from which a myriad of ferries leave for the nearby islands.

Options

Entry requirements for European citizens

Valid Identity Card or Passport. Your Passport should have at least two empty pages. If you are not a citizen of the Eurpopean Union please contact the appropriate consular services for advice.

Climate - You are going to Northern Europe and temperatures can be much lower than in most European countries. During the day the temperature can vary between 12°C et 25°C, and nights can be very cool. Mosquito repellent and weather proof clothing are sensible things to have with you.

Luggage - There are some short walks or journeys by public transport between stations and hôtels ; you will have to carry your own luggage during these transfers and also place your luggage on racks in the train. We advise you therefore to travel as lightly as possible, with a small piece of luggage.

Money (Applies to all tours to Scandinavia) - Sweden, like Denmark and Norway, isn't part of the Euro zone. The local currency in Sweden is the Swedish crown and one Euro equates to roughly 10 crowns. Confusingly crowns are also the local currencies of Norway and Denmark but they are not interchangeable and have different foreign currency values. Finland is part of the Euro zone. Almost all major credit cards are accepted and you will find ATM's in all the towns where we stay.

For the meals that are not included in the programme, a light lunch might cost around 70-90 Swedish crowns. Eating out in restaurants for an evening dinner with wine included can however be more expensive than in other countries, except perhaps the UK. A special mention should be made for Norway where prices are approximately 50% higher than in other European countries. You can check all exchange rates before leaving by using our currency converter on our links page.

Miscellaneous (Applies to all tours in Scandinavia) English is widely spoken in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, other foreign languages (French, German etc.) far less so. In the north of Swedish Lapland, inhabitants often speak in addition to Swedish, one of the several variants of the sami language which is also spoken in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. In Finland, in addition to Finnish, Swedish is also an official language, spoken by approximately 6% of the population. (Mainly in the coastal areas of western Finland).

Finns, Swedes and Norwegians attach great importance to respecting Mother Nature and like cleanliness and respect for others. If you smoke please consider bringing a travel ashtray with you and note that all trains, hotels, bars and restaurants are strictly non-smoking.

Journey to Copenhagen and back - You have numerous possibilities ; the following airline companies have flights from major European cities to Copenhagen : Lufthansa, Air France, Norwegian, Ryanair, SAS.  You can also get to Copenhagen by train quite easily from most cities and we will be pleased to supply details on request. Please note that discoveryTRAINS assumes no responsibility for the exactitude of any information given about, nor for the execution, of your journey to and from Copenhagen, as this is not part of our package. You remain sole responsible for the organisation of your journey.
