This brief but exciting luxury rail cruise is the perfect way to discover the unspoilt beauty and landscapes of the provinces of Northern Spain. Details

Day 1
Individual arrivals in Gijón. Welcome by the team of the "El Expreso de la Robla" between 13h30 and 15h45 followed by a guided visit of the train and its saloons. Departure of the luxury train at 16h for Galicia. On arrival in Ribadeo on the mouth of the river Eo, guided visit of the town followed by dinner served in the local Parador. First night on board the train in the wood-panelled sleeping compartments, each one equipped with two bunk beds, cupboard, air-conditioning, WC and shower.

Day 2
Whilst breakfast is being served, the train heads westwards to Viveiro, where a guided tour awaits. The tour gives ample opportunity to discover the town's ramparts and the panorama from Mont San Pelayo. After the visit the journey continues to Ortigueira for a connection by motor-coach to Cariño, on the Cantabrian Sea. Lunch is served in Cariño followed by an excursion to Cap Ortegal. The magnificent cliffs mark the northernmost point of Spain.

Heading ever westwards, the excursion continues to the sanctuary of San Andrès de Teixido and then to Cedeira before returning to Ortigueira for dinner. Overnight in Ortigueira.

Day 3
After a buffet breakfast served on board the train, a motor-coach is waiting for the excursion to Santiago de Compostella. An historical town and renowned destination for pilgrims from the world over, the town is particularly busy in 2010, a "Saint James Year". A guided visit ensures guests make the most of their stay in the town before continuing on to the coastal town of A Coruña.

After lunch in the town, free time is available for a stroll along the seafront or in the historical town centre. At the end of the afternoon Ferrol to the north is the next port of call. After dinner in Ferrol, overnight in the train in Ferrol.

Day 4
During breakfast the train heads eastwards towards Foz. A motor-coach is waiting for the excursion into the Cantabrian hinterland and the town of Mondoñedo; after a guided tour of the town the journey continues to Rinio on the Cantabrian coast. After lunch in Rinio, visits to the Lighthouse and the Cargadero de Ribadeo before rejoining the train in Navia for the final leg of the jouney back to Gijón. Arrival and end of tour at approximately 21h.

Please note 15% of the total amount is retained in case of cancellation, but you may change the departure date once with a minimum of 30 days notice before the original departure date. If you change dates less than 30 days before, then there is a 15% surcharge. If you cancel subsequent to a change of date, 100% of the cost is due.

Options

Pre and post tour travel options :

 

a) Outward journey on the Tuesday from Paris (London, Brussels, Amsterdam) to Valladolid by Trenhotel night train, double sleeper accommodation or 4-berth couchettes. From Valladolid to Gijón local trains across the Cordilera Cantabrica via Leon. On the Wednesday overnight 4**** hôtel accommodation in Gijón. Return journey : Extra night in Gijón on the Sunday. On the Monday afternoon local trains to Valladolid and then by "Trenhotel" overnight train to Paris (London, Brussels, Amsterdam). Arrival early Tuesday morning in Paris.

b) Outward, return or out and back by Brittany Ferries (Portsmouth or Caen) overnight cruise ship and onward connections from/to Santander and Gijón.. Possibility to combine ship one way and train the other and additional nights' hôtel accommodation.
