Tunisian Oasis'

Tunisia is known above-all for its beaches and sunshine : this tour is an opportunity to discover the multiple facets of Tunisia's countryside and varied geography. Centered around the exploration of the oasis towns of Tozeur, Mahrès and Gabès and the islands of Kerkennah, it is also an occasion to explore Tunis and enjoy the sights of the delightful village of Sid Bou Saïd.

Introduction

Throughout this off-the-beaten track journey, your guide will be at hand to help you learn about the history and geography of the places visited. During the week you'll travel at a leisurely pace from North to South and from West to East, in an easy-going and informal atmosphere. After the initial train journey from Tunis to the edge of the desert in Tozeur, you'll take the train for further short journeys, complemented by some short sections by four-wheel vehicule, ensuring you experience  the heart of Tunisia's countryside.

Details

Day 1

Individual arrivals at Tunis-Carthage airport or the port of la Goulette and welcome by our guide and local expert. Transfer to the hôtel Ezzahra in Hammam Lif. Optional individual excursion  (depending on time available) to Tunis using one of the numerous suburban trains. Overnight in Hamman-Lif.

Day 2

Departure from Hammam-Lif in the morning aboard the direct Tunis-Tozeur day train. During the day on the train you'll have ample opportunity to remark on the changing landscapes and vegetation as the train heads ever southwards. Upon arrival in Tozeur luggage is transferred directly to the hôtel, allowing the group to take a leisurely stroll through the desert town to the hôtel. Overnight in Tozeur.

Day 3

After the previous day spent on the train, today is dedicated to the exploration of Tozeur, this amazing and vibrant town on the edge of the desert. There is plenty of time available to take in the sights and sounds and the typical southern tunisian architecture as your guide unveils Tozeur's nooks and crannies. Later in the day there is the possibility to take an optional tour by bike. Second night in Tozeur.

Day 4

After breakfast, departure by local coach for the short journey to Metlaoui where the famous "Lézard Rouge", train awaits. This historical train will take the route through the beautiful Selja Gorges, hugging the river which flows from Reydef to the west to Metlaoui in the east. Upon returning to Meydef, the four drive vehicule is ready for the journey to Tamerza with a stop for lunch and the possibility of a short (2 hour) optional walk across the Tamerza-Midès canyon for those who wish to stretch their legs. The journey continues on to Gafsa. Overnight in Gafsa.

Day 5

A short taxi ride brings the group to the railway station in Gafsa for the morning departure to Mahrès on the east coast. Upon arrival, check-in at the hôtel and lunch at the hôtel. After lunch transfer by four-wheel drive vehicule to the national park of Bou Hedma. After exploring the unspoilt natural area of the park, a typical local evening meal is cooked and the evening's observation of wildlife and fauna comes to an end. Return to Mahrès and overnight at the hôtel.

Day 6

After breakfast free time is available for observing the birds on Mahrès's shoreline before taking the train for the short journey to Gabès. Upon arrival transfer to the hôtel and lunch. During the afternoon, free time is available to be spent at your leisure or alternatively you could take an optional guided tour of the town by bike. Evening meal at your leisure and overnight at the hôtel in Gabès.

Day 7

During the morning transfer to the railway station to join the direct train for Sfax and the connecting boat for Kerkennah. A picnic lunch will be had either on the train or on the boat. The afternoon will be spent exploring the island and in the evening the day will come to an end with a typical fish meal. Overnight on the island.

Day 8

Free time is available in the morning before rejoining the boat and the return to Sfax. In Sfax a connecting train takes the group to Tunis for an end of afternoon arrival in the capital. Connecting local trams and trains then convey the group to the beautiful coastal village of  Sid Bou Saïd. After checking in at the hôtel and a visit of the village, our farewell evening dinner awaits. Overnight in Sid Bou Saïd.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport (or port) and return journeys home..
